How Many Hours of Sleep Are Enough?

Ensure you’re getting the sleep you need

Many people abide by the average rule of sleeping that says you should try to get at least eight hours of sleep per night. But some people require more time sleeping and some perform fine with fewer than eight hours. Doctors have recognized that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to sleep time!

As you grow and mature, your sleep needs change, and the quality of your sleep also plays a role in how well you function and perform when awake. We’ll look at several aspects of sleep to help you discover whether you’re getting as many hours of quality sleep as you need. We’ll also introduce you to our healthy and natural pillow mist, offering deep and restful sleep for people experiencing problems falling asleep.

Sleep Quality

Doctors use several factors to measure sleep quality in their patients. They differ according to a person’s age, but generally include:

  • Spending at least 85% of your time in bed sleeping
  • Falling asleep within thirty minutes or less
  • Waking up no more than once per night
  • Being awake for no more than twenty minutes after initially falling asleep
  • Spending at least 20-25% of your time sleeping in the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage

People can perform as they generally do without reaching all of these benchmarks every night. Very few people enjoy a perfect night’s rest all the time. However, if you’re spending hours tossing and turning before falling asleep, waking up continually throughout the night, or having trouble falling back asleep after waking, it can eventually affect your mental acuity and alertness.

Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation can build up slowly and be caused by physical ailments, including high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and obesity. It can also be caused by stress and worry. Sleep deficiency has also been linked to a higher chance of injury, as people having trouble sleeping at night are more prone to fall asleep during the day while working or driving.

People who have been sleep-deprived for a few days or more can require more time sleeping to return to a normal state of alertness and functionality.

Sleep Requirements and Aging

Most people recognize that their sleep habits change as they age. They may be able to function on less sleep, wake up more often during the night, or even divide their time sleeping into two stages by reading or watching TV when not sleeping.

Sleep Recommendation by Age

Doctors have stopped recommending eight hours of sleep for everyone and instead are looking at the different amounts of sleep required as we age.

The human body tends to require less sleep as we age. Our metabolism slows down, and we get in the habit of conserving our energy. Here are the recommended average amounts of sleep per age group:

  • Infants 4 months to 1 year old – 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 1 to 2 years old – 11 to 14 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 3 to 5 years old – 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 6 to 12 years old – 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 13 to 18 years old – 8 to 10 hours per night
  • Adults – at least 7 hours per night

We’re most likely to experience sleep problems from our mid-twenties to mid-thirties. Adults who get less than the recommended seven hours of sleep are more prone to weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and depression.
